When considering the implications of a windstorm on your home, you should also think about what would happen if a hurricane blew through your hometown. On top of strong winds, hurricanes can also cause water damage and flooding. Do you live in an area that has a high risk of hurricanes and/or windstorms? Here are a few tips for preparing your home and family for weather’s worst.
Make a Plan
Sit down with your family to create an emergency plan in the event of high winds or a hurricane. Determine the safest area within your home. Everyone should know to go there, duck down and cover themselves with a blanket or jacket to protect against flying debris. Also consider family pets in this plan. You should also discuss where you’ll go if you need to evacuate.
Pack Supplies
If you’re worried about evacuation after a bad forecast, preemptively pack a go bag. There should be enough non-perishable food and bottled water for everyone to live off of for three days, including pets and babies. Throw in first aid supplies, extra clothes, phone chargers, a weather radio, flashlights and batteries, blankets, insurance documents and other important items. Also, be sure that everyone’s phone contains the numbers to reach family and your insurance agent.
Prepare Your Home
If a storm is coming, move your cars into the garage and make sure at least one has a full tank of gas in case of evacuation. Patio furniture and other outdoor items should be stored in a garage or shed, or tied down well so they don’t become projectiles in high winds. Close the shutters or board up the windows with plywood. Valuable items and documents should be moved up as high as possible (or moved to a safer location) to protect them from floodwater. Keep plenty of bottled water on hand for drinking and sanitary purposes in case your home’s water is turned off.
